Both a Coupon and a Discount Applied at the Same Time

This is the most common Dollar-specific reason codes stop working — and it catches many renters who are used to booking Avis, Hertz, or Budget where stacking is allowed.

Dollar does not allow a coupon (promo code) and a discount (CDP) to be applied to the same booking. If both are entered on Dollar's booking page, one will typically override the other — and it may not be obvious which one has been applied, or whether either is actually reducing your price. The result is often a higher rate than if just one code had been used correctly.

Common ways this happens:

• Entering a CDP number in the discount field and then also entering a coupon code — Dollar ignores one or produces an unexpected rate
• A browser coupon extension auto-applying a code on top of a CDP you've already entered
• Using a booking flow from another agency where both fields are expected to be populated

Expired Coupon or Promo Code

Dollar coupon and promo codes have fixed expiry dates. A code that worked on a previous rental will have expired — and third-party coupon sites frequently continue to list expired Dollar codes long after they've ended.

Common sources of expired Dollar codes:

• Third-party coupon sites — many don't remove expired Dollar codes promptly and continue to rank for Dollar promo code searches
• Browser coupon extensions — auto-apply extensions regularly suggest expired Dollar codes
• Old emails and bookmarks — Dollar coupon campaigns have fixed end dates
• Social media and forums — shared codes are rarely updated when they expire

Code Entered in the Wrong Field

Dollar uses two separate fields — one for discount/CDP numbers and one for coupon/promo codes. Entering a coupon code in the discount field, or a CDP number in the coupon field, will prevent the code from being processed correctly.

Blackout Dates

Dollar coupon and promo codes carry blackout periods when they do not apply, regardless of how correctly they're entered. These are most common during peak travel periods.

Common Dollar blackout periods:

• Major US holidays — Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day
• Spring break — mid-March through mid-April at popular destinations
• Peak summer weeks at high-demand locations

Location Restrictions

Not all Dollar coupons and promo codes apply at every location. Common restrictions include airport-only, neighbourhood-only, or exclusions at specific high-demand markets.

• Some Dollar promotions are limited to airport locations only
• High-demand markets including New York metro airports are frequently excluded
• Most codes specify "valid at participating locations" — some franchise locations opt out of promotions

Minimum Rental Requirement Not Met

Some Dollar coupons require a minimum rental period or minimum spend. If your booking is shorter or cheaper than the minimum, the code won't apply — and often no error message is shown.
