Hertz Coupon Not Working? Here's Why — and How to Fix It
Invalid Coupon Hiding Pay Later Rates and Removing CDP Savings
This is unique to Hertz and the most consequential coupon failure mode. Unlike most rental agencies where an invalid code simply produces no discount, Hertz's system reacts to invalid coupons more aggressively:
- Pay Later rates disappear — the results show only prepaid, or rates guaranteed by a credit card. This removes your ability to cancel for free and use the rebooking strategy.
- The CDP discount is removed — even a valid CDP code you've correctly entered may be overridden, leaving you with a higher rate than if you'd applied no codes at all.
- No error message is shown — Hertz's system doesn't tell you the coupon failed. The price simply changes, and many renters don't notice.
Sources of invalid Hertz coupon codes:
- Third-party coupon sites — many aggregate sites don't remove expired Hertz codes and continue to rank in search results for months after codes expire
- Browser coupon extensions — auto-apply extensions frequently suggest expired Hertz codes and may appear to have applied successfully when they haven't
- Old emails and bookmarks — Hertz coupon campaigns have fixed expiry dates; a code from a previous campaign will no longer work
- Social media and forums — shared codes are rarely updated when they expire
Booked Less Than 24 Hours Before Pickup
Hertz coupon codes require the booking to be made at least 24 hours before the scheduled pickup time. If you book on the same day as pickup — or less than 24 hours in advance — the coupon will not be applied to your rate, even if it is otherwise valid.
This is a firm system requirement, not a blackout or compatibility issue. The coupon simply won't work on same-day bookings regardless of the code, the location, or the CDP you have applied. Your CDP discount will still be in effect — only the coupon saving is lost.
Entering Codes in the Wrong Field
Hertz uses two separate fields at booking: one for CDP numbers and one for coupon codes. Entering either code in the wrong field prevents it from being processed correctly.
| Field | What to Enter | Format |
|---|---|---|
| CDP Number | Your Corporate Discount Program number — membership (AAA, Costco, Mastercard), corporate employer, or promotional CDP | Numeric (e.g. 2255305) |
| Coupon / Promotion Code | A promotional coupon for a specific offer — free rental day, percentage off, or money off | Alphanumeric |
Expired Coupon Codes
Every Hertz coupon has an expiry date. A code that worked on a previous rental will have expired — and applying it can trigger the Pay Later suppression and CDP removal issue described in Reason 1.
Blackout Dates
Hertz coupon codes carry blackout periods — dates when the promotional code does not apply regardless of how correctly it's entered. These are most common during peak travel periods.
Common Hertz blackout periods:
- Major US holidays — Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day
- Spring break — mid-March through mid-April at leisure destinations
- Peak summer weeks at high-demand locations
- Local events — major sporting events and conventions can trigger location-specific blackouts
Location Restrictions
Not all Hertz coupons apply at every location. Common restrictions include airport-only, neighbourhood-only, or exclusions at specific high-demand markets.
- Airport-only coupons — some Hertz promotions are limited to airport locations and won't apply at neighbourhood or off-airport locations
- Excluded markets — high-demand cities including New York metro airports are frequently excluded from Hertz promotional codes
- Participating locations only — most Hertz coupons specify "valid at participating locations" — franchise locations can opt out of promotions
CDP and Coupon Incompatibility
Not all Hertz CDP and coupon combinations are valid pairings. Some promotional CDPs exclude certain coupon types, and some deeply discounted corporate CDPs may not allow additional coupons to stack on top.
Quick Troubleshooting Reference
| Symptom | Likely Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Coupon not applied on same-day booking | 24-hour advance booking requirement | Hertz coupons require at least 24 hours between booking and pickup. CDP discount still applies. Book in advance whenever possible. |
| Pay Later rates disappear when coupon is applied | Invalid or expired coupon code | Remove the coupon — Pay Later rates should reappear. Switch to a verified coupon code from CarRentalSavers.com dropdown. |
| Price unchanged or higher after applying coupon | Invalid coupon removing CDP saving | Remove the coupon and verify your CDP is still applying. Use CarRentalSavers.com verified codes only. |
| Code accepted but no discount shown | Blackout dates or location restriction | Try a different coupon from the dropdown. Check whether your dates fall in a known blackout period. |
| CDP not applying | Entered in coupon field instead of CDP field | On CarRentalSavers.com this can't happen — select from the discount dropdown and the code goes in the correct field automatically. |
| Coupon worked last time but not now | Code has expired since last use | Hertz coupon campaigns expire — use CarRentalSavers.com where expired codes are removed immediately. |
| Browser extension applied a code and price went up | Extension applied an invalid Hertz code, breaking CDP and Pay Later | Disable the coupon extension, clear cookies, and search fresh on CarRentalSavers.com. |
