Thrifty Coupons (Promo Codes / Promo Numbers)
Thrifty coupons — also referred to as promo codes or promo numbers — are applied through the coupon field rather than the discount field. Like CDPs, Thrifty coupons can also deliver percentage savings. The coupon rate can sometimes be higher than the CDP rate, or vice versa — which is why testing both is the only reliable approach.
The Free Day Coupon — A Special Case
The Thrifty Free Day coupon works differently from a flat percentage coupon. On a 3-day rental a free day is effectively 33% off; on a 4-day rental it's 25% off; on a 5-day rental it's 20% off. This makes it particularly valuable on shorter rentals where a flat percentage CDP discount may deliver a smaller saving in dollar terms. When a membership CDP tends to win:
- When you have a strong membership CDP (AAA, Costco, Mastercard) and the percentage exceeds available coupon rates
- During peak periods when promotional coupons are blacked out — membership CDPs are typically less restricted by date
- On longer rentals of 6+ days where a consistent percentage CDP compounds across more days than a Free Day coupon covers
When a coupon tends to win:
- When a Thrifty promotional coupon offers a higher percentage reduction than the available CDP for your dates
- The Free Day coupon on 3–5 day rentals — can represent 20–33% off, often exceeding available CDP percentage rates
